Goals
The School of Music's goals are
To provide high-quality teaching and learning in aspects
of music within an environment of active participation in research, original
creative work and professional performance which is consistent with the terms
of the University Charter - in particular:
the promotion of excellence in teaching, research and scholarship;
- the maintenence and accepted principles of academic freedom;
- a contribution to the betterment of society and response to the needs of society.
- To equip students with the skills:
- to work independently
- to be self-motivated
- to be able to make informed judgements, and
- to be able to contribute effectively to the musical well-being of the community.
- To contribute to the cultural life of the University at large in addition to the wider community.
To help achieve these goals, the Music's objectives are:
- To provide students with the opportunity to study courses
within the dicipline of music to the extent to which the School's resources
allow, and in accordance with staff abilities and interests, which provide
a core of knowledge and skills necessary for the educated music graduate;
a range of optional studies related to the specific expertise and interests of staff so as to permit specialisation. - To provide the staff with the facilities, resources
and time to undertake research, creative work and/or performance engagements
in keeping with their expertise and in support of the profile of the department
so that staff are able:
to supervise research, original composition and performance in accordance with their specialised expertise;
to encourage students of appropriate ability to undertake postgraduate study.
To discuss any course development with representatives of students of
the School so that programmes of study and the resources for those programmes
take note of students' perceived needs in education.- To maintain contact with other agencies in the community involved in music education and music making with a view to co-operating with them in areas that relate to the education of the students of the School.
- To develop links between the School and other departments within the University and with organisations in the wider community by enhancing and developing the functions of music in society.
- To present high-quality performances and teaching and learning opportunities for students and members of the public involving visiting performers and scholars.
