Frequently Asked Questions

1. What are the ages of Junior Music Academy students?

The programme is designed for students from 14 years of age onwards. We will however take younger students into the programme if they show exceptional talent.

2. When does the Junior Music Academy meet?

Full programme students will have their individual lessons during the week, as scheduled by their tutor.

Part time students have their lessons once per month during the University of Canterbury term time, as scheduled by their tutor.

3. What performance opportunities are available?

The Pettman Junior Academy students will perform regularly all over Christchurch and Canterbury. Academy teachers will be present at every concert and will give the students feedback on their performances.

4. How do I get accepted?

The Pettman Junior Academy accepts students on the basis of an audition. The director and a panel of staff members of the Junior Academy will be present at the audition. Applicants are asked to prepare two contrasting pieces.

The length of the programme should be between 10–15min.  Acceptance is based on the standard of the audition performance as well as the number of available places and an interview which is part of the audition.

Students who live outside of Christchurch may send a DVD instead of attending an audition.

5. Can I continue to take lessons with my private teacher?

Yes if you enrol for the Part-time Programme, your Junior Academy teacher will see you once per month.

No if you enrol in the full programme. For these programmes your Junior Academy teacher will see you every week and should be your only teacher.

6. Are beginners accepted?

No. The Junior Music Academy is not a place for beginners. Students are expected to perform at very advanced levels.

7. Is there a limit on the length of study in the Academy?

Students can reapply annually up until they have finished secondary school.

8. Do we have to pay separately for the lessons?

No. The tuition fee covers all activities.

9. Am I eligible for a scholarship?

The Junior Academy has several scholarships available. They are based on the quality of the audition and on financial need.

10. Does the Pettman Junior Academy of Music term run at the same time as the school term?

No. The Pettman Junior Academy of Music term times run in conjunction with the University of Canterbury. Therefore the start and finish times of the programme and holiday breaks are different to the school system.
