Background

Stephen was appointed to the staff of the University of Canterbury in 2003. He has worked extensively in the area of live sound in theatre, corporate and concert venues with training in Recording Arts with a number of recording projects to date. He has a solo and band performance background and a singer/songwriter, playing guitar with a history of playing saxophone, clarinet and bass, having tutored guitar and taken the role of Music Director for a number of groups. He comes to the University to facilitate the technical requirements of the School of Music which include work with equipment, recording, web assistance, multi-media, live work and any other techncal support. His past employment has also included Foreman/Builder and Youth Worker/Event Co-ordinator. In 2009/2010 Stephen taught in the Recording and Production Techniques Course (Musi 125) for three years and tutored a number of groups in the field of Live Sound culminating this year in a teaching course to 46 volunteer sound engineers .

His involvement in 'theatre sound' has grown in the last 9 years having engineered productions in a number of NZ venues (Napier, Palmerston North, New Plymouth, Ashburton and Wellington) along with Showbiz Christchurch, The Court Theatre (Christchurch), NASDA (National Academy of Singing and Dramatic Art, part of CPIT Christchurch) and STAC Christchurch. Along with sound operation Stephen was also the sound designer for each of the NASDA Musical Theatrel shows. These productions include: Sweeney Todd, The Producers, La Cage Aux Folles, 2 seasons of Les Misérables, 2 seasons of Annie, Blood Brothers, My Fair Lady, Grease, The Full Monty, Cats, My Favourite Year, Once on This Island, The Happy Prince, Bat Boy, Into The Woods, Urinetown, Showcase, Hot Shoe Shuffle, The Sound Of Music, Fiddler on the Roof, Oklahoma, Finalé '08, '09 and '10 (NASDA/Jazz School and CIRCO Arts), 'I Love You You're Perfect Now Change', Oliver, MTE '09, '10 and '11 (NASDA), Sideshow, Anything Goes, 42nd Street (New Plymouth 2011 and NASDA), The Wedding Singer, Curtains, The Music Man, Cabaret, '11 production of CATS in Ashburton, Cloud Street July 2011.
