Background
David Cox studied horn with Ed White at Victoria University of Wellington, where he also completed a degree in Mathematics in 1980, and then with Anthony Halstead and Timothy Brown in London. During his years in London he worked with chamber ensembles, period instrument ensembles, orchestras and contemporary music groups including Albion Ensemble, Academy of Ancient Music, English Chamber Orchestra, Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields, London Symphony Orchestra, London Sinfonietta and many others. He also taught horn and chamber music at the Guildhall School of Music's Junior Department and toured extensively with the musical comedy theatre company, The Right Size.
Since returning to New Zealand in 1992 he has been principal horn of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra and horn tutor at the University of Canterbury as well as private teacher of many successful students. He plays on occasion with Auckland Philharmonia, New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and in the NZ International Festival of the Arts and has recorded for Concert FM. David is a founder member of the Canterbury Wind Quintet.
