Background

Wilma Laryn moved to Christchurch in 1996 from Italy, where she was a chartered high school teacher of Maths and where she had a 5-year experience of amateurial prose acting and co-direction.

Here she has been involved in diverse teaching experiences, such as Italian cooking and Italian language at night classes. Her interest in opera brought her to coach first Canterbury Opera and now Southern Opera Chorus in Italian diction for several seasons. She is particularly interested in Italian librettos and scores from a linguistic point of view, specializing in Renaissance and early Baroque texts that she analyzes through their sources and translates into English.

Since 1999 Wilma has been a broadcaster with PLAINS FM 96.9, producing and presenting an ongoing radio program of Italian culture and music, CARTOLINA. Among other events, she has also researched and co-ordinated a number of concerts (Italian Madrigals, An Italian Extravaganza, Monteverdi Concert, Concert for Flute and Piano).

In 2005 Wilma has been awarded by the Italian Government the Order of the Italian Star of Solidarity, for her activity in promoting the Italian culture in New Zealand.
