Background

Iaan Wilson was a professional Trumpet player for thirty five years, having been appointed Principal Trumpet of the Ulster Orchestra at the age of 19. There followed positions with the English National Opera, The BBC Symphony Orchestra and then the Royal Opera House Orchestra at Covent Garden London, playing under conductors such as Kempe, Boulez, Boult, Tippett, Britten, Bernstein, Haitink and Stravinsky.

He was invited to become Prof of Trumpet, Natural Trumpet and Cornetto at Trinity College of Music in 1980 and then The Royal Academy of Music to teach with James Watson, and where he was Acting Head of Brass for a year covering for John Wallace.

Iaan Wilson has recorded with every major orchestra in London and toured Australia, Japan, China and Europe. He has also made many early music recordings including the world premiere of the Vivaldi double Trumpet concerto on Natural Trumpets plus concerts and recordings with the world famous Phillip Jones Brass ensemble.

Since his arrival in New Zealand Iaan has taught and examined for the Victoria University and devised a four year brass course for the University of Canterbury. This year he has been invited to adjudicate for Chamber Music NZ and The Gisborne International Solo Competition.
