Dr Roger Buckton and the directors of the Music Education Research Centre, David Sell and Merryn Dunmill lead research into Music Education.
Music education encompasses the following disciplines:

• composition
The National Centre for Research in Music Education and Sound Arts (MERC) serves as the national hub for the coordination of and contribution to research in music education and sound arts. Through its activities the Centre will increase understanding and knowledge of the musical arts in education and in the wider community. MERC is devoted to developing the national and international profile of music education in Aotearoa New Zealand through its activities, partnerships and collaborations.
Sound Ideas is a journal devoted to music education concerns. Originally published three times a year (Volumes 1-6) by the School of Music, University of Canterbury, it is now a peer-reviewed journal and will be published on an annual basis as an on-line journal
Other current research in Music Education includes a PhD on “Music Education and Information Computer Technology” and an M A on ”An itemised study of the relationship between performances in selected musical tasks as revealed in the 2000 NEMP scores and of musical activities, both in and out of school, as revealed in the 2000 NEMP surveys”
